An overnight fire occurred at an oil refinery in Russia’s Samara region. Overnight explosions and the sound of drones were reported by residents of Novokuybyshevsk. The air defenses and mobile fire teams were operating, Samara Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said in a message. He did not say that the hit was delivered to the refinery.
The Russian plant was allegedly attacked by Fire Point’s FP-1 drones from Ukrainian side. In particular, the drones reportedly hit the facilities of Rosneft, including the diesel hydrotreating unit. Fire Point claimed that numerous hits were delivered to the grounds of the plant. However, the Kyiv Independent, which published the footage online, wrote that it could not verify the footage online as well as the extent of the damage.
Late Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Ukrainian forces responsible for the long-range strikes into Russia had informally stopped attacks on Russian refineries after pressure from the Trump administration. The Journal said the pause was expected to last until after the November 3 midterm elections in the US. Reuters had also reported that story.
Fire Point claims that the refinery has a design capacity of 8.8 mln tonnes of oil a year. It was also named in an earlier report on a strike on the refinery in August. The company however does not explain what exactly happened in the refinery tonight, whether it was damaged and whether it is operating normally.
It looks like the proxy war didn’t take a week off for the US elections. A Ukrainian drone company claims to have hit a target. The governor confirmed an attack and did not confirm a refinery strike. The pictures are unverified for now.
