Russia struck Kyiv in the early hours of Sunday morning, killing one person and wounding 13 others, as AFP journalists on the ground heard explosions moments after the Ukrainian air force’s Telegram warning of incoming ballistic missiles. One blast was powerful enough to set off car alarms across central Kyiv. The attack hit six districts: an apartment building in Solomianskyi, a supermarket fire in Sviatoshynsky, a shopping and entertainment centre in Dniprovsky, another apartment building in Shevchenkivsky, and a non-residential building. In Dnipropetrovsk, a separate Russian drone strike killed another person, regional official Oleksandr Ganzha said on Telegram.
The Sunday bombardment came in direct retaliation for Ukraine’s Saturday drone campaign against Russia. Ukraine launched a mass strike on Wildberries e-commerce warehouses in the Moscow and Tambov regions, killing eight people and causing major fires at logistics facilities Zelensky claimed were being used to “supply sanctioned components for drone production and navigation equipment.” Russia’s own numbers show the attack killed nine and injured around 60. More than 370 Ukrainian drones were launched toward the Moscow region overnight, per Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. Between July 11 and 18 alone, Russia intercepted nearly 1,892 Ukrainian drones heading toward Moscow by its own figures, per AFP.
Ukraine’s “long-range sanctions” campaign — Kyiv’s name for its systematic targeting of Russian economic infrastructure — has disrupted ordinary Russian civilian life on a scale not seen since the war began, triggering what Kyiv calls a full-blown fuel crisis in one of the world’s largest oil producers. Separately, Ukraine’s drones hit 11 Russian vessels in the Azov Sea overnight — tankers, dry cargo ships, and a tugboat — according to Al Jazeera. The dual challenge for Ukraine is stark: almost daily Russian attacks on its territory, compounded now by the political instability triggered by Zelensky’s wartime sacking of his defense minister, which has sparked Kyiv street protests still ongoing.
Meanwhile, Moscow continues to take territory in Donbass.
