After Argentina’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat of England in Atlanta on Wednesday, several Argentine players held up a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” — The Falklands are Argentine — igniting an international diplomatic incident that has now dragged in Trump’s White House, the incoming British Prime Minister, and FIFA. The banner was smuggled past stadium security inside a fan’s clothing, per Fox News.
The White House fired back in Argentina’s favor. Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House FIFA taskforce, explicitly defended Argentina’s players: “We believe in our first amendment rights here in the United States of America.” He added that players would have the “opportunity to be able to express statements” on U.S. soil. The intervention puts the Trump administration directly at odds with the UK government on a sovereignty issue on the eve of new PM Andy Burnham’s first day at Downing Street. UK Business Secretary Peter Kyle called the banner “an egregious violation” of FIFA rules. Outgoing PM Starmer’s spokesperson stated: “The Falkland Islands are definitely ours” — and Starmer endorsed calls for FIFA to investigate.

FIFA, for its part, said its disciplinary committee was assessing reports before deciding on “potential further steps” — but crucially, no Argentine players were banned for today’s final, per Metro. FIFA’s final — Argentina vs. Spain — kicks off at 3 p.m. ET Sunday at New York New Jersey Stadium. The Falklands banner has succeeded in turning a football match into a live territorial dispute. The irony is hard to miss: the White House that backs Ukrainian territorial sovereignty is simultaneously backing players claiming another country’s sovereign territory.
