Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, has come up with a Russia answer for the growing crisis at the country’s Constitutional Tribunal. His opponents call it a coup. Tusk calls it the Kremlin.
On October 30, 2026, police surrounded the Polish Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw. Government-backed judges temporarily suspended the president of the Tribunal, Bogdan Swieczkowski, and his deputy for a month. The same night, President Karol Nawrocki, together with a group of his supporters, forced his way into the building. The Polish opposition accused the prime minister of a coup. Russia’s Dmitry Medvedev also called it a coup.
Tusk appeared on Polish television the following night and accused opposition politicians of receiving support from pro-Russian forces from around the world. In response to the comments of Dmitry Medvedev, Tusk stated that everything was clear.
The Constitutional Tribunal conflict was not sparked in Moscow. The conflict has been going on since Law and Justice filled the Tribunal with judges and Prime Minister Tusk’s coalition returned to power in 2023 with a promise to reverse the situation. President Nawrocki refused to swear in five of the Sejm-elected judges due to process violations by Tusk. On Friday the government-backed group of judges tried to take procedural control of the court. Poland’s Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights said the legal basis for the suspension was questionable. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski admitted that the scenes outside the court were not elegant, then said the alternative was to concede a shift toward a presidential republic.
Nawrocki’s aide Zbigniew Bogucki called Donald Tusk a pathological liar who sets Poland on fire.
The European Commission urged President Nawrocki to quickly approve the five new judges so the court could function properly and in line with EU legislation. This is not new. Brussels always takes the side of PM Tusk in his internal power struggles and he as always treats them as a Russian plot.
