The president said fresh military action may be launched if Iran does not reach a deal with the US, Breitbart reported. In the meantime, he said he was keeping up pressure on Tehran through economic means. Trump spoke Friday at a campaign rally for the midterm elections in Fort Myers, Florida. At the rally he looked back on the operation that he calls “Epic Fury,” which took place in February, and hinted that a repeat could be necessary.
As the President explained, Iran should “come and negotiate,” but Tehran is “not smart.” It is “unlikely to take this deal.” Earlier in the day, the President said the U.S. controls the Strait of Hormuz and that oil from other nations was free to pass through it. However, he noted that Iran’s own oil exports would be restricted, and said that the U.S. was getting everything it wanted. He then asked reporters whether it would be better to finish it or allow Iran to wither on the vine.
Additionally, the US President hinted that America has the military might to not only go after Iran’s oil, but also the country as a whole. No plan for such a move was laid out, but the comment showed how far the administration might be prepared to push its pressure effort.
Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a post on Friday that the efforts of the US had crippled Iran’s oil export network, even as energy exports from the rest of the Persian Gulf had rebounded, now exceeding levels from before the conflict – a result, he said, of the success of Operation Economic Outcast in shrinking Iran’s fleet of shadow tankers, leaving its main oil terminal empty and draining its offshore storage.
In an interview with Mario Nawfal released Friday, Tom Barrack, the US Ambassador to Turkey, said American forces might strike Iran as soon as this weekend. He added, however, that the US President remained open to a negotiated agreement with Iran.
Ahead of the Florida rally, the president also seemed to joke about whether Tom Barrack, the Ambassador to Turkey, was in any position to forecast the timing of a US military strike on Iran.
