President Donald Trump called on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) to immediately resign from Congress, saying she was sworn into office using a “fake name.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “It was just revealed that Ilhan Omar’s name is not Ilhan Omar, the one she used to get elected and sworn into Congress, but rather, it’s an entirely different name, Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, and that her last name is, incredibly, also the exact name of her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the person they said she married and had children with. When asked whether or not she married her brother, she said, ‘Not to my knowledge.’ In other words, she somehow didn’t know? Therefore, because she used a fake name to be sworn in, I assume she must IMMEDIATELY resign from Congress. Please inform the Speaker of the House of Representatives, James Michael Johnson, that the Dumocrat Party has just conceded her seat. Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, her real name, has openly admitted to FRAUD, and she will not be legally allowed to be a Member of this August Body from this point forth. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
The President made similar comments about Rep. Omar (D-Minn.) during a rally in Sioux City, Iowa on Thursday, reports the New York Post. “She used a fake name to be sworn in,” he said. “I assume she must immediately have to resign from Congress.”
According to the New York Post, a court filing from U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office in the District of Columbia refers to Omar under the name “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” The filing, from Wednesday, is a request to a judge to keep sealed a federal search warrant of Omar’s Washington, D.C. home, reported by Newsweek. The Post was told by a source close to the investigation that Omar’s birth surname is not her Congresswoman surname and that she was born with the last name of Elmi.
U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche commented on the matter to the Post. “I don’t think [Assistant United States Attorneys] would make up names,” he said. “Evidence that’s collected is used in motions.”
In the previous reports, CDM noted the investigation into alleged immigration fraud by U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) by the federal Department of Justice, including the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia led by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro. The search warrant for Omar’s Washington, D.C. home was partially executed on October 12 by Homeland Security Investigations agents, according to the Post. The agents reportedly took her cell phone, a computer, her passport and other items, and Breitbart reported they took 17 items in all and collected DNA. In addition to the alleged immigration fraud investigation by Pirro’s office, CDM also previously reported that the same office is investigating Omar for alleged financial crimes, according to Breitbart News. Prosecutors and legal experts told the Post that the Justice Department is looking at an indictment alleging immigration fraud within a 10-year statute of limitations.
According to the Post, Trump referenced an interview that Omar had on MS NOW with host Chris Hayes on Wednesday. Hayes asked Omar if she was related to her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Omar responded saying, “Not to my knowledge.” Trump called the response “one of the worst answers I think I’ve ever heard” and said that he believes Omar “has been a scammer for a long time.”
Omar’s office disputes the claim. “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name,” a spokesperson told Fox News Digital, according to Newsweek, calling the allegation a “desperate smear.” In 2016, she called insinuations that her ex-husband was her brother “absurd and offensive.” Omar says she became a citizen at the age of 17 through her father, who became a naturalized citizen in 2000. She has not been charged with any crime and has denied any wrongdoing.
None of these assertions have been proven true, including the claim that Elmi is her brother. No charges have been filed against the congresswoman. It is worth noting that in the court filing, “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar” appears in reference to her, but that does not necessarily mean she ever used that name on any official documents, or that any such use was illegal. Trump’s assertions about Omar using a “fraudulent name” to take her oath of office have not been established as true.
Whether she must be removed from Congress is another question. That is for Congress to decide, and expulsion takes a two-thirds vote of the House. At the Iowa rally, the President seemed to acknowledge the difficulties involved, saying, “I don’t know: If you get sworn in with a false name, I would imagine that’s pretty tough to remain.”
CDM has followed the Omar investigation as it has developed, and this filing adds a new question to earlier reporting that challenged some of the congresswoman’s accounts of her family. The new question of how she used her name is one that will have to be answered by evidence in a court of law. For now, that evidence has not been presented.
