Alice Weidel, co-leader of the German right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD), said in a recent podcast interview with The Economist that the German government does not want the war in Ukraine to end.

When the reporter said everyone would like the war to end, Weidel answered, “Not our government, actually.” In the meantime, Weidel added, the German government keeps passing one package of sanctions after another.

Weidel said Donald Trump is talking with Vladimir Putin about diesel, oil and gas.

Weidel also questioned the official explanation of the Leipzig airport drone incident, which according to German government sources had been carried out by Russia. There was no evidence of this in parliament, Weidel said, and she referred instead to the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines. A trial of a Ukrainian suspect has in the meantime begun, the newspaper Welt reported. Weidel called for increased pressure to be placed on Ukrainian President Zelensky to bring an end to the fighting.
