The United Nations General Assembly is once again a venue of theater, on Thursday hosting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a speech. As he began to speak in New York, a large portion of the delegates left their seats and filed out of the hall in a highly organized manner, with a UN official attempting to restore order before Netanyahu had even started speaking.
Netanyahu was in his element. With the remaining delegates seated in front of him, he invited the “moral cowards” in the room to join the others who had left their seats to take his words outside of the UN chamber.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an outstanding arrest warrant for Netanyahu’s detention for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The warrant has been strongly condemned by Israel and the US as illegitimate. However, an even more intriguing drama was playing out on the streets of New York prior to Netanyahu’s arrival. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been waging a very public war of words with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani had publicly announced his intention to enforce an ICC warrant for Netanyahu’s detention just days prior to the Israeli leader’s arrival in the US. In the end, however, Mamdani acknowledged the hard reality that there are no legal means by which he could enforce such a detention on Israeli citizens residing in the US.
The Israeli leader went on to criticize Mayor Mamdani calling him an “antisemite” and accused him of spreading misinformation. Netanyahu also went on to clarify what he called a “simple truth” — that Israel had not committed genocide in Gaza. Instead, he said, Israel had prevented Hamas from committing genocide against the Israeli people. “Here’s a simple truth,” he said. “Israel didn’t commit genocide. Israel prevented genocide — and that’s exactly what Mr. Mamdani’s Hamas buddies would have done to us had we not stopped them.”
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani shot back in a statement. “No statement from Netanyahu can change the fact that he remains the subject of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity.” For now, though Israel continues to receive support from Trump administration officials, the mood in the UN General Assembly is largely in sync with the mayor’s.
What has been missing from most coverage of this latest installment of UN theater is any serious analysis of the institution itself.
