Grassley has an unusual idea for bringing diesel prices down — Trump isn’t sold yet

U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, has a suggestion for President Donald Trump as Americans deal with rising diesel prices.

In a social media post on Saturday, Grassley proposed imposing an embargo on diesel exports as a means to help farmers who are struggling with such a steep increase in prices.

“If our govt can embargo chips to China it can embargo diesel to help American farmers & truckers. We need our family farmers who feed & fuel the world [to be] on the strongest footing possible no matter what’s happening across the globe,” he wrote in a follow-up post on Sunday.

Those who rely on diesel to fuel the American food supply are currently facing an average price of $6.51/gal, according to AAA. This is nearly double last year’s price of $3.70, with the national average price rising 40 cents just this last week. This is bad news for Republicans, who currently hold the congressional majority as well as the White House, as voters prepare to head to the polls for the midterms.

Trump has blamed the Russia-Ukraine war for the rise in fuel prices, but others credit the Iran War and the battle over the Strait of Hormuz for the pain at the pump.
