Mark Carney tells European Parliament that Canada will be forging a “unique security and economic alliance” with the European Union, a project designed so that “no one can dictate our choices.”

He didn’t have to mention the country by name because everyone in the room understood perfectly that he was speaking about the United States.

For the record, Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of a country which shares the longest, undefended border in the world with the United States and has for decades a defence industrial base deeply interwoven with that of America, has just flown to Europe to announce that Canada will forge a “unique security and economic alliance” with the EU — a foreign bureaucratic superstate designed to remove choices from its citizens, which for the past decade has been obsessed with the project of trying to regulate, to impose sanctions upon, to out-compete in trade, the industries of the United States.

The European Union is not a “trade partner” in the sense of a neutral entity that on occasion might disagree with the United States on a particular matter relating to tariffs. No, the European Union is an ideological entity — a supranational, bureaucratic entity — constructed upon the same globalist structure that has contributed to the decline of working-class communities across the Western world. It is an entity that has forced open borders upon its member states, working to undermine energy, manufacturing, and economic interests of the United States. In short, the European Union is the institutional enemy of America First.

And now it has a foothold on our northern border.

Von der Leyen, who has often used her post as the leader of the European Commission to pressure national governments to cede sovereignty to the Brussels-based superstate, proposed Tuesday that Canada become the EU’s first “associate member.” After the proposal was met with pushback from the EU, it was walked back and von der Leyen specified that she did not wish to “blur the lines” between associate membership and full membership in the EU. But the intent is the same: Carney wants to lock Canada into European defense procurement, energy policy, and regulatory frameworks. He’s already on board with the EU’s €150 billion defense loans scheme for the next 20 years, and he’s currently pushing for the two parties to establish visa-free travel and work permits for the citizens of EU member states.

Carney wants to integrate the capital markets of Canada and the EU, and to integrate Canada into the EU’s labor market. That means that when Canada does business with Europe it will do so within the EU’s rules on issues like defense procurement. He wants Canadians to have visa-free travel to EU countries, to be able to work there, and for EU countries to have similar access to Canada.

Think about what that means strategically. You will have a country on our northern border whose defense procurement, capital markets, and labor mobility are increasingly integrated with Brussels — not Washington. A country that was inside our defense perimeter, sharing raw intelligence through Five Eyes, operating jointly under NORAD, is now openly shopping for a new strategic anchor.

This isn’t the first time that Carney has signaled that he’s looking to position Canada as a “safe harbor” for global capital. He told Bloomberg that he believed the ongoing trade disputes between the US and Canada were “a war.” A Republican senator has publicly warned Carney that a unique security and economic alliance with the EU will really hurt the chances of a free trade agreement with the United States. The implications of this for the United States of America are far greater than a simple trade negotiation, however.

This leaves the United States to deal with adversaries on both its eastern and western borders, in two vast oceans, and in Latin America where it is in growing competition with China for influence. And now, as Carney attempts to build a new security and economic alliance between the EU and Canada, a Canadian government will be working against the interests of the one country on the planet where the EU views the sovereignty of America as a threat to be managed.

That government exists now. Washington needs to respond accordingly.
