JD Vance, the Vice President, hinted at the sudden shift in the conflict between the US and Iran. In a few months, Washington will move from the destruction of Iran’s military capabilities to a new phase of containment of the country, right before the November midterms, the White House believes will be the end of major hostilities.

Vance discussed the “two-phase war” with the New York Post in an interview published on Tuesday. He said that the “first phase” of the war to destroy Iran’s nuclear capability was “pretty much over” and that “we’re moving to a second phase, of trying to make sure that they can’t rebuild, in order to try to maintain as much global stability in the wake of that.”

He echoed President Trump’s comment from September 9th that the conflict would end “immediately after the election because they can’t hold out any longer.” Vance, however, would not commit to a specific date for when the war will end and how the conflict will transition into a new phase of containment.

The ongoing conflict began on Feb. 28. U.S. military operations include ongoing strikes against Iran, daily airstrikes, a naval blockade to prevent the export of Iranian oil, attacks on American warships by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, and attempts to get commercial shipping to safely transit the Strait of Hormuz. In the meantime, U.S. and Israeli strikes continue to target Iran’s nuclear infrastructure in an attempt to prevent the reconstitution of Iran’s nuclear program.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Wednesday that Iran’s nuclear ambitions have been “taken care of,” in a signal that the White House believes it has won the main conflict with Iran, although the central strategic issue of whether Iran will accept a ceasefire or begin to rebuild its nuclear program in secret remains to be resolved.
