President Donald Trump responded to a pardon request in the Lindsay Clancy case from defense attorney Kevin Reddington.
The president has finally addressed whether he would get involved in the outcome of the case, calling it “very sad” but saying that the issue is a “state situation” and not a federal matter.
“There’s no winner there. There’s no win, no matter what you do. Three children are dead,” he noted.
While Reddington was aware that Trump had no real authority to issue a pardon directly, he was hoping that the president could use his influence to bring about a favorable outcome for his client following the mistrial.
“He’s a good attorney. I’ve heard from other people he’s a very good attorney,” the president said of Reddington. “I hope they can work it out. That’s something they have to work out … There is no win there.”
He had previously expressed his opinion on the killing of three children, allegedly as the result of the overmedication of Clancy’s postpartum symptoms.
“It’s a shame, it’s a horrible tragedy. I see what’s happened, and it looks like it’s a hung jury. I think the judge just said it’s gonna be a mistrial, I assume there’s going to be another trial,” he said. “It’s a terrible situation. She did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse. But you’ll find out what the price to pay is, there’ll be a price. Could be mental institution or jail, or something. But I guess they gotta go through another trial; it’s too bad.”

Following this statement, Reddington encouraged the president to actually get involved rather than just offer his opinion on Clancy’s actions.
“I’d like to say that perhaps Donald Trump, who felt compelled to speak out about this case, may very well, Mr. President I would hope that you would consider this young lady, the type of person she is, what she’s been through, and consider a pardon,” Reddington said to Good Morning America host George Stephanopolous.

It is uncertain where the case will go from here, but it’s clear that the president will not have a hand in the outcome.
