Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, sent a message to express his “deep concern over reports of hazardous conditions for transgender immigrants” in ICE custody.

In a public letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Greene claimed that “deliberate agency policies” were responsible for the poor treatment of transgender detainees, including not providing them “specialized medical care.” Effectively, the lawmaker is lamenting that the government won’t provide hormone replacement therapy to all applicable subjects awaiting immigration hearings or deportation.

Watch:

“Dear Secretary Mullin, I write to express my deep concern over reports of hazardous conditions for transgender immigrants in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities, resulting from deliberate agency policies,” he said. “Some things bear repeating: This is a result of deliberate agency policies, including the denial of medical care and removal of protections for transgender individuals. In recent months, the federal government has halted the provision of specialized medical care for transgender detainees in at least 10 essential cities across the nation, which experts have warned can cause physical and mental health complications.”

“Additionally, the Trump administration ended a Biden-era policy of reserving detention center units for transgender women. As a result, transgender women in detention facilities have been placed either with men or in solitary confinement,” he continued.
