In a major military training exercise that wrapped up on Tuesday, Israel’s 210th “Bashan” Regional Division rehearsed dozens of extreme scenarios as part of an effort by the IDF to ramp up preparedness on the northern front. Throughout the drills, held on the Golan Heights and along the border with Syria, the regional division practiced dealing with a number of complex scenarios including responding to a massive attack that would result in mass casualties, rapid deployment of a reserve force, and the handling of a variety of complex situations on the battlefield. The scenarios that the 210th Division was training for were inspired by the lessons learned during and after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
The 210th Division is responsible for the Syrian border (Golan Heights) and the Lebanese border (Mount Dov). The border with Syria has not been calm for many years. This is because the Israeli forces who entered Syria at the height of the war against Assad are still there, and in recent years even expanded their area of operations. The exercise on the Golan is part of the acceleration of exercises on all fronts, in light of the multi-theater war in which Israel is involved — in Gaza, in Lebanon, in Syria, and against Iran.
The IDF conducted the large-scale exercise on the Golan Heights. The scenarios drilled were unexpected large-scale ground attacks, providing air support in contested skies, and mass-casualty events with appropriate triage. According to the IDF, this was an exercise aimed to increase operational preparedness for unexpected and complex incidents on the Syrian front.
Syria’s new government, which includes elements affiliated with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has been engaged in initial diplomatic contacts with Israel. Syria’s foreign minister said earlier this week that, through the United States, Damascus is working to reach a diplomatic solution with Jerusalem, even as Israeli airstrikes continue to hit targets inside Syrian territory.
Analysts continue to track rapid developments on the regional front. Iranian proxies remain entrenched in Syria, as IRGC forces engage in near-daily exchanges with U.S. and Israeli forces across the Gulf, from Iraq to Lebanon. The IDF is proceeding under the assumption that no front is frozen.
Defense analysts note that as a result of the intelligence and readiness failure on the southern border on October 7, large-scale exercises involving multiple divisions and complex scenarios are no longer the exception but rather the standard operating posture for the Israeli military.
