Now that the Trump administration’s Department of Justice Weaponization Working Group has produced a massive 210-page report that shows the FBI’s Richmond Field Office was targeting traditional Catholics as potential domestic violent extremists, everyone wants to know one thing: when are the dismissals?
An explosive report released Friday details in exhaustive detail how the FBI monitored and surveilled two Catholic priests as part of a much larger and wider-reaching conspiracy to target traditional Catholics as potential domestic violent extremists, also confirming leaked documents from January 2023 which exposed that the FBI had been relying on the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)’s extremist classification of “radical traditionalist Catholics” for their anti-Catholic investigation.
Attorney General Todd Blanche stated in the report that “the individuals who developed the Richmond Domain Perspective are no longer with the Department” while Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward described the scenario as “a clear abuse of power” targeting “disfavored” beliefs held by “conservative” and “religious” individuals who were subjected to the actions of government agents who were not properly supervised.
“Fired” is not the same as “dismissed with cause,” and does not necessarily mean that the individual in question will lose their pension or be referred for criminal prosecution. The memo was not written by a single rogue agent, but rather was the product of several individuals over time. Some supervisors at the field office level actually defended the targeting of traditional Catholics in the US, and gave good performance evaluations to the agents who wrote the memo. Those same supervisors should be held accountable for their actions.
Former FBI Director Christopher Wray testified under oath before Congress in July 2023 and said the memo was a “single product” in a “single field office.” The now-released report however reveals that multiple offices were involved in the surveillance of the priests with no national security nexus whatsoever. It therefore appears that Wray’s testimony to Congress was at best grossly misleading. Where is the accountability for that?
Under Biden, the FBI classified attending the Traditional Latin Mass, holding conservative family values, opposing abortion, and “rejection of modernity” as markers of potential extremism — relying on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s far-left framing of a major American religious denomination to open federal law enforcement files on Catholic priests.
The Trump DOJ deserves credit for the full report’s release and the removal of the relevant employees. But “no longer with the Department” leaves many questions unanswered. Were they fired for cause and stripped of their pensions? Were any referred to the Inspector General for possible criminal referral? Are any of them currently on the federal payroll in some other capacity?
The American people must know the answers to these questions, particularly the tens of millions of Catholics in this country. The weaponization of the FBI against the faithful is not a matter of merely fixing a few processes and sending employees off into the sunset with a quiet exit and their full pensions intact. It is a great scandal that demands great and visible accountability.
The targeting of Christians continues across the Western world an beyond. It has to be stopped by ensuring accountability for such behavior.
