‘They just lie’: Hegseth mocks NBC News over bogus 2028 presidential claims

NBC News was accused of making a “100% false” report despite being told ahead of time about a cabinet official’s position regarding a 2028 presidential bid.

“All other speculation is foolish.”

Days ahead of a Republican Midterm Convention and weeks out from the midterm election, attempts at dividing the GOP have taken various forms, including speculating on the next race for the White House. Arguably Vice President J.D. Vance’s nomination to lose, denials of intent didn’t stop NBC News from using “anonymous ‘sources’” to report that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth could be eying the Oval Office.

Published Friday evening, a report from Courtney Kube, Peter Nicholas and Matt Dixon claimed the cabinet official already spoke with “close friends and associates” about a potential campaign in 2028 after making an appearance at the Iowa State Fair.

Handling the fact check himself, Hegseth posted to X, “100% false. We told NBC that, but they just lie [with] anonymous ‘sources.’ My only job: Make @DeptofWar Great Again. Carry on Patriots, and enjoy your Friday night.”

Within the report itself, the Pentagon was cited as calling the claims “foolish,” as NBC News shared, “Secretary Hegseth is not running for president, and his main priority is leading the War Department. All other speculation is foolish.”

While speculation has featured myriad potential candidates running in 2028, including Donald Trump Jr., Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and more, presumptive frontrunner Vance’s leading competition is considered to be Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Suggesting as much, columnist Joe Concha reacted to the debunked story, “The ‘report’ never made any sense. Pete Hegseth would have to run against either JD Vance or Marco Rubio, and that was never going to happen.”

Worth noting, Kube was among those running with a smear campaign against Hegseth at the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second administration, wherein the cabinet nominee was accused of being “abusive” to his ex-wife before their divorce.

Additionally, earlier this year, Kube was publicly chastised by Hegseth when she attempted to interrupt a question being asked by Daily Caller White House correspondent Reagan Reese.

“Excuse me, why are you so rude?” posited the secretary. “Just wait. I’m calling on people.”

Hegseth was reportedly heard calling Kube “so nasty” under his breath.

As for the secretary’s time spent in Iowa, where White House hopefuls traditionally test the waters, his attendance included stumping for Iowa Rep. Zach Nunn’s (R) re-election campaign.

While reactions viewed Hegseth as a viable contender for 2028, many admired his response to the corporate media report that, rather than being framed as a non-answer, slammed the door shut on speculation with intent to carry on with the task at hand.
