Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has confirmed that a cyber attack on the group has led to customer data being compromised at three UK airports.

Information including customers’ email addresses and phone numbers, plus the details of their vehicles including their registration numbers, and their postcodes, have been exposed by the breach. The information, which was held on systems used to deal with customers’ bookings and access to Wi-Fi within the airport, relates to car park bookings, bookings for airport lounges and Fast Track through security.

MAG are containing the risk and are working with a team of specialist cybersecurity advisers, plus relevant authorities, to address the matter. Airport operations are unaffected and passenger safety and aviation security are being maintained. All future bookings will continue to be honored by the airport.

Customers who have been affected by the breach have been written to by MAG and advised to be on guard against suspicious looking emails, texts and phone calls. Customers are advised not to click on any links or open any attachments in unknown emails. Online Manage My Booking services have been temporarily withdrawn.

An attack of this scale affecting millions of customers in the run up to a busy period of travel increases the risk of targeted phishing and smishing attacks utilizing the legitimate information that has been compromised. But MAG’s operational systems remain unaffected by the incident.
