President Donald Trump has ordered Lake Ontario to be renamed “Lake America” in the latest escalation of the trade war with Canada.

“Project America: It is official. As of today Lake Ontario is now Lake America. All of the necessary papers, documents, everything else were filed today,” the President said in the Oval Office today.

The executive order further claims the deepest portion of the lake, in U.S. waters, comprises most of the lake’s volume. He claims Lake Ontario has long been of great value to the United States for American exploration, settlement, commerce and defense of the country.

Reporter: “Mr. Trump, the name of the Lake Ontario. What message are you trying to send to the people of Canada?”
The President: “No message. Canada has been taking advantage of the United States on trade for a long time. They don’t pay for anything. They just tell us what they want and we do it. They want to be treated as a state but they are not a state.”

This order requires the Department of the Interior, and the Board on Geographic Names, to update the maps, documents, and Geographic Information Systems of the United States to reflect the change in the name of this Great Lake.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney weighed in on the matter on X, stating that the name of Lake Ontario predates both countries. “The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io. The name means ‘the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.’ It is a name greater than 400 years old. The name Lake Ontario predates the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. Lake Ontario — then, now and always. The name will never change,” he wrote.

The Great Lake in question has been called by this name since at least the 1600s. It is the inspiration for the name of the Canadian province of Ontario, where the country’s capital, Ottawa, and largest city, Toronto, are located.

For his part, the President said that renaming the Gulf of Mexico, the “Gulf of America” last year was “easy” to accomplish. He said that the Interior Department, Google and Apple “are all on board” but that “the rest of the world” has chosen to ignore him.

“Now, all we need is an ocean. So, maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific. Maybe we’ll change them both,” said the U.S. president.

“The Americans can call it whatever they want to call it. It is Lake Ontario.” – Canadian Maritime Attorney Marc Isaacs.
