Russia has threatened to attack British military targets in Ukraine and beyond after claiming that Ukrainian forces had used British weapons to attack targets on Russian soil.
Maria Zakharova, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson, said at a briefing in Moscow that if London continues to pursue a hostile policy towards Russia, “then this conflict will move to an entirely new level.” Zakharova said Britain must “reconsider” its hostile policy towards Russia and stop supporting long-range missiles for Ukraine.
Zakharova clarified that by “on the territory of Ukraine” Russia means not only to facilities located in Ukraine but also to the British military facilities and equipment deployed in Ukraine and abroad. It is a position which Russia has taken since 2024.
The move follows a decision by the UK to provide Ukraine with classified technology to start producing Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles, used by the British and French militaries. France had previously licensed the technology to be used on SCALP missiles.
Zakharova accused Britain and France of ‘playing with fire’ and transferring the most sensitive part of the missiles’ technology to Ukraine. “It is very easy for them to sit in their offices and transfer the assembly of the part of the missile to Ukraine, in order to have no responsibility of the strikes which will be launched deep into Russian territory,” she said, adding that the consequences of their actions “could be unpredictable, including for them.”
Russia had previously issued a similar warning in May 2024, following comments by then U.K. Foreign Secretary David Cameron that Ukraine was entitled to use British-supplied weapons to attack targets inside Russia. The Foreign Ministry then told the British ambassador that all British military facilities and equipment, both within and outside Ukraine, could become targets for Russia.
