Governor Tim Walz and Minnesota AG Keith Ellison’s far left efforts to turn one ICE Officer into a political prisoner have failed. Minnesota will have to settle for that.

On Wednesday, Federal Judge Rodriguez denied Minnesota’s Temporary Restraining Order against Abbott and the Sheriff. Minnesota’s attempt to legally force Governor Abbott to give up Officer Christian Castro, age 52, also failed. Christian Castro’s 90-day detention is officially over today, Thursday August 27, 2026.

Castro was a federal officer who was part of the January 14 immigration enforcement operation in the Twin Cities. According to the Department of Homeland Security, an officer shot a defensive round after being assaulted with a snow shovel and a broomstick by three attackers. Sosa-Celis was struck in the leg by the round. Minnesota charged Castro with 4 counts of 2nd degree assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime.

Blue state officials attempted to use the courts to criminalize federal immigration enforcement when they sued Governor Abbott to force him to extradite Castro back to Minnesota. This was a brazen attempt by leftist officials to turn federal immigration enforcement laws on their heads. Judge Rodriguez saw through it.

The court ruled the case was “not ripe.” Texas law authorizes Abbott to refer the extradition request to the Texas Secretary of State for review. Because Abbott neither consented to nor refused to sign the warrant, Minnesota’s lawsuit was based on conjecture about hypothetical future events. Federal courts do not manufacture crises on demand.

After 90 days with no governor’s rendition warrant executed, a person held on an out-of-state extradition warrant must be released under Texas law. Today is that date. Both Walz and Ellison have completely run out of options.

This case had little to do with justice. It was about power — a display of power by blue states to prosecute federal agents who enforce immigration law. A signal from Democratic AGs that any ICE officer who defends himself and his team on the job becomes a criminal in their eyes. Governor Abbott and Judge Rodriguez just delivered the message back.

As reported by CNN, the Justice Department is reportedly pursuing federal charges against Castro on a parallel track — but the state-level lawfare play by Walz and Ellison has collapsed. The constitutional wall held.

Border enforcement agents, take note. Texas has your back. Minnesota’s legal mob does not.
