Uber driver gets the wildest pickup imaginable when COPS commandeer his ride mid-chase

An Uber driver in Texas gave a once-in-a-lifetime ride after accidentally getting caught up in a police chase.

Imagine this: It’s 12:20 a.m. in Houston, Texas, and you’re cruising around, looking to make some money by giving late-night Uber rides to night owls and third-shifters. Your tranquil evening is suddenly shattered when a shirtless man hurtles across the street with police officers in pursuit.

This is exactly what retired Army Sergeant Anthony Baines experienced on August 8, when an officer waved him down and hopped in the front seat of his vehicle.

An Uber driver in Texas had a couple of unexpected passengers during a late-night shift — a couple of out-of-shape Houston Police Department officers needing help to track down a suspect.

“Hey, give me a ride over there please,” a female officer says, according to the video. “Go, go that way … go, go, go, go, go!”

The officer is all business as she starts telling Baines where to drive, and instructing him to pick up another female officer. They direct the man further and drive around for a couple of minutes before apparently spotting the suspect and bailing out to continue the foot chase.

“What the f**k?!” Baines can be heard laughing to himself in disbelief, the calm music he had chosen to complement the late-night vibe still playing over the radio.

“It caught me completely off guard,” he later told Storyful. “I’ve never had anything like that happen driving. I was surprised but just did what the officer asked in the moment.”

“I’m just running off adrenaline. I am surprised. I’m shocked. I have cops ordering me to do things. I’m going to comply. I didn’t want to resist or anything of that nature,” he added.

Houston police confirmed that the video was real in a statement to KRPC 2, noting that the suspect in the video was being investigated after a complaint was phoned in that he allegedly threatened to shoot a mother and her children. He was reportedly upset over claims that someone had stolen from him.

While Baines was understanding of the situation the two officers were in, his wife was not as sympathetic.

“Two people signed up to be in those situations. Two people are getting paid to be in those situations. One of them wasn’t, you know. So that was the risk that my wife was concerned about,” he said.

“The gap between the cops and the suspect, I felt that it would make sense for them to get in a vehicle and pursue the suspect because he was extremely fast. I didn’t think they would be able to catch him on foot,” he continued.
