In a “horrendous attack” a former pupil of Brinell High School in Fagersta, central Sweden stormed his old school armed with a sword killing one person and seriously injuring three others before being shot and arrested by police.
According to Police Chief Tommy Alriksson, the 18-year-old attacker was shot during the arrest. The attacker, who was identified by police as an 18-year-old male, was a former student of the Brinell High School, but the police did not provide any further information regarding his motives in the attack. The three seriously injured in the attack were all transported to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
In a message to the families of the deceased and the people affected by the event, Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf called the event “a deeply shocking act of violence.” Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in a televised address asked the nation to unite in the wake of the tragedy. An investigation into the case is currently being conducted.
Sweden has seen a number of violent incidents in recent years, many of them tied to organized crime and gang activity. However, Fagersta does not fit into this profile of a small industrial town affected by gang-related violence. At present, there is no indication that this attack is in any way connected to Sweden’s ongoing problems with gang violence, or to issues with immigration and the integration of immigrants.
The Brinell High School attack in Sweden is the latest in a number of school violence attacks to occur across Europe within the last few months. A review of the incident, along with current school violence across Europe, is expected to lead to increased calls for better security at schools as well as mental health screening of students and teachers. Emergency discussions are set to take place at the Swedish parliament when it returns from recess next week.
