Massachusetts Democrats protected an illegal immigrant three times while one of their constituents lost his life.

Heriton Da Silva Aredes is a deported Brazilian national who came back to the United States and continued to engage in a career of criminality by committing assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, reckless operations of a motor vehicle, and furnishing a false ID among other illegal acts.

He started to come on ICE Boston’s radar in August 2023, after the Massachusetts State Police apprehended him in Middleboro. He was released by the state authorities before immigration agents were able to act. Not long after his release, he was arrested for the same transgressions by the Stoughton Police Department. Once again, ICE was unable to act before he was released.

The situation was the most grave in July 2026 when Aredes was charged with the negligent homicide of a motor vehicle victim. With his posting of bail, the Bristol House of Corrections released him without notifying ICE or honoring the immigration detainer.

It was not until August 6 of 2026 that ICE was able to arrest Aredes in the targeted operations in Taunton, Massachusetts.

According to acting ICE ERO Boston Field Office Director David Wesling, “Sadly, it seems like Bristol County Sheriff Paul Heroux went through with his vow to not assist ICE, which resulted in the release of this illegally present criminal alien offender, who is charged with vehicular homicide, into the community that he represents.” According to Wesling, this criminal alien has been held by state and local authorities three times, and each time they released him without addressing our detainer. He stated that if one of the prior detainers was addressed, the homicide victim’s death would have been avoided.

Sheriff Heroux has not disputed any of the statements. Instead, he was proud to talk about it.

“This is another example of how ICE Boston wants me to break state law,” Heroux said to the Boston Herald. “State law says that if someone posts bail, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status, we have to let that person go. Period. Full stop.”

This is the argument in favor of sanctuary cities in its most direct, assertive, honest form. Massachusetts Democrats have created a system that shields illegal aliens charged with vehicular homicide from federal immigration enforcement. The state’s “Lund decision” shields local officials from the federal immigration enforcement system and requires the release of alien criminals back into the communities where victims have already been murdered.

One name is notably missing from ICE’s press release. A person died. Their family will forever bear the consequences of a policy introduced by Massachusetts lawmakers, designed to benefit the open-border lobby at the expense of the safety of the residents of the state.

DHS summed it up best: “If you come to our country illegally and break our laws, we will find you, arrest you, and you will never return. Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the United States.”

Massachusetts Democrats clearly did not receive the message. Three times.
