Thanks to Trump’s first impeachment, Alexander Vindman gained enough notoriety to publish self-aggrandizing memoirs and become a regular on news shows. He even ran for Senate, but the Florida Democrats rejected Vindman on Tuesday by about 12 points against Angie Nixon, a Democratic Socialist and state lawmaker who was significantly outspent.
President Trump was not going to let Vindman’s loss pass quietly. After the election results came in, Trump posted on Truth Social that Vindman should be prosecuted for being “a real treasonous creep” and for lying about the call he called “perfect” with Ukraine’s Zelensky. “Vindman, if you remember, was the one who lied about my ‘Perfect Call’ with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, only to find out that the conversation was routinely recorded and proved that I was 100% in the right,” Trump wrote. “It was, indeed, a Perfect Call, and the Dumocrats Fake Impeachment effort massively failed. Vindman should be prosecuted for what he did!”
In both of his impeachments, Trump was acquitted. The Senate vote in December 2019 — which Vindman’s testimony helped trigger — ended with Trump walking out of the Capitol vindicated. Vindman, for his part, had been built up as a patriot-turned-hero by a media establishment that bet heavily on impeachment as a political strategy, and lost big.
Now that same political apparatus has nothing left to show for it. Vindman’s twin brother, Rep. Eugene Vindman (D-VA), still holds a House seat. But Alexander’s political career appears to be finished — buried not by Republicans, but by the Democratic base, which has drifted so far left that a corporate-backed establishment candidate with a military résumé and $16 million in the bank couldn’t survive a primary against a card-carrying socialist.
Nixon now faces Sen. Ashley Moody, a Republican incumbent who won her own primary with nearly 80 percent of the vote and carries a Trump endorsement into November. Florida has not elected a Democratic senator since 2012. That math doesn’t change because the nominee is further left.
The donor class that wrote Vindman’s checks is already looking for an explanation. The simpler one: in a party increasingly run by its activist base, a retired lieutenant colonel who became famous for his role in a failed impeachment is not a compelling pitch. Florida voters, even Democratic ones, apparently noticed.
Washington’s impeachment industry produced several such celebrities — people elevated to political stardom by their willingness to testify against a sitting president. Vindman was the most prominent, and the most explicitly political. He leveraged that testimony into a book deal, a media contract, and eventually a Senate campaign funded by the same donor network that has been losing Florida for over a decade. Tuesday’s result is a fitting verdict.
