Costco shoppers stunned as thief allegedly bring a machete and pickaxe to jewelry heist

An armed heist was cut short by Costco customers and employees in South Carolina.

Despite coming to the store armed with a pickaxe and machete in the hopes of stealing thousands of dollars in jewelry, police say all 24-year-old Jose Alejandro Giraldo left the place with a new pair of silver bracelets.

“FOX Carolina similarly reported, citing police, that callers initially described the weapon used to break the display cases as appearing to be a hammer. Police later confirmed Giraldo had a machete and pickaxe, the outlet reported,” Fox Business wrote.

Local reports indicate that Greenville police responded to several 911 calls of a robbery in progress at the Costco on Woodruff Road, as the suspect allegedly smashed the display cases. When he was confronted about his behavior, reports indicate that he also suggested he was armed with a gun. Shoppers and employees rushed to detain the young man, with one person sustaining injuries. Medical services were dispatched, but no additional information on the extent of the injuries was made available.

The 24-year-old was hit with armed robbery and third-degree assault and battery charges on August 13.
