President Trump pulled the plug on the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises with South Korea this week, directing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to “substantially reduce” the annual drills — and the foreign policy establishment is screaming. It shouldn’t. Trump is connecting dots that Washington has refused to connect for years.
Start with what Seoul just did to its own president. Yoon Suk Yeol — the pro-American, anti-CCP South Korean leader who declared martial law in December 2024 after warning that his country’s election integrity had been compromised — is now serving a life sentence. The same government that jailed Yoon for trying to stop what he called a CCP-influenced political coup is the government that just told Trump: no thanks, we won’t help with Iran.
That refusal is the tell. Trump named it directly on Truth Social: “I recently asked the President of South Korea if they would like to join us in the Denuclearization of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and they said, ‘No thanks!'” The parenthetical he added — “while somewhat unrelated (?)” — is doing a lot of work. It isn’t unrelated at all.
The thread runs through A-WEB — the Association of World Election Bodies, headquartered in Seoul and funded for years by USAID. What A-WEB does, in practice, is export South Korea’s election management systems and methodology to countries around the world. Independent researchers have documented its deep entanglement with Chinese Communist Party-linked networks and its role in spreading the same centralized, opaque electronic election infrastructure that China uses domestically to control outcomes. USAID — now a known CIA-adjacent operation — was the primary funder. The same apparatus that compromised South Korea’s elections has been exported, systematically, to democracies on every continent.
Yoon saw it. He declared martial law. The CCP-aligned political apparatus in Seoul destroyed him for it — life in prison, then another 30 years tacked on for the crime of sending surveillance drones into North Korea. The message was unambiguous: the old order would not tolerate exposure.
Trump also cut through the diplomatic pretense around the drills themselves. “Based on my very good relationship with Kim Jong Un, of North Korea, I am not happy with the fact that the United States has, long ago, agreed to participate in Joint Military Exercises with South Korea,” he wrote. The exercises are “not only costly, with much of these costs paid for by the United States of America (as usual!), but send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile” to a country that has been “unthreatening and respectful” during his presidency. North Korea conducted two ballistic missile tests in the past six days — the war lobby will use that to argue this is exactly the wrong moment to scale back. But that argument has always been circular: exercises provoke tests, which justify more exercises. Trump is choosing to break the cycle.
Trump’s cancellation of the war games is not a gift to Kim Jong Un. It is a signal that the United States is no longer going to finance the security of a government that jailed its own anti-communist president, exports CCP election infrastructure globally under an American-funded umbrella, and refuses to take a phone call when Washington needs a partner on Iran.
The establishment will call this reckless. The establishment built the system that’s currently running.
