The Indiana floods that hit this week caused catastrophic damage including at least 6 deaths and many missing, breaking flood records that have stood since 1913. The initial cause was a stalled weather system that dropped two days worth of rain in just 48 hours. The White River swelled to record high levels — breaking its Noblesville record and filling Anderson with historic water levels. Central Indiana suburbs were hit hard as the flooding swept through neighborhoods and commercial districts alike.
Governor Mike Braun and President Trump stepped in to offer emergency assistance to begin help for the people and local services affected. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett called it the city’s worst flooding in more than 30 years. Trump’s swift approval of a federal emergency declaration unlocked FEMA disaster assistance before the floodwaters had even finished rising — exactly how the federal government is supposed to respond to American citizens in crisis.
The Indianapolis metro area’s emergency dispatch centers began an unprecedented rescue effort with support from the Indiana National Guard’s vehicles. The Indianapolis Fire Department rescued 95 people and 45 pets by late Saturday afternoon. The neighborhoods where the White River and the parallel canals converge were surrounded by floodwaters, forcing evacuation orders across hundreds of homes.
Among those who died were a 4-year-old boy whose home was struck by a falling tree, a 58-year-old woman whose car was washed away by floodwater, and a teenager who was later recovered after entering a flooded river. Deaths were spread across Delaware, Jennings, Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties.
The National Weather Service in Indianapolis labeled the flooding as catastrophic. More than a dozen counties declared local disasters. Conditions at many monitoring stations were at or beyond historical peak levels — the White River crested at 24.93 feet in Anderson, shattering a record set in 1913. At Noblesville, the river hit 24.6 feet. The storm system is expected to remain active into Sunday, with a cold front finally expected to break the pattern. Communities along the White River from Spencer to Centerton should brace for further crests through early next week.
