Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz gave comments this week on Israeli media regarding the Sunni nation of Turkey to the north, Christianity, and the Levant.
“We are not the collapsing Christian empire. Jerusalem is not Constantinople, which you conquered when you built the Ottoman Empire. We are here forever. Jerusalem is ours forever. We know how to defend ourselves, and we are strong.
“Don’t mess with us. My advice to Erdogan is not to mess with us and not to put himself in the position that Iran put itself in. He still has plenty of room to avoid that. Instead, he should take care of Türkiye and its own affairs. We will take care of our own interests, and we will continue to do so.
“We will not allow Erdogan to strengthen Syria against us. We know how to defend Israel’s interests. There is no direct military confrontation between Israel and Türkiye at the moment, and we have no desire to enter one.
“But Erdogan should also make sure he has no such ambition, because our strength is with us. We are not intimidated.
“The Muslim Brotherhood axis is another axis that, over time, could become no less dangerous. Türkiye and Qatar are part of that axis.
“The Muslim Brotherhood operates not only against Israel; it also works to overthrow President el-Sisi in Egypt and King Abdullah in Jordan. That is how we see it. Perhaps the United States sees it differently, but we are responsible for our own interests.
“We very much want to strike Iran’s energy targets. The United States is not approving it at the moment because of the concern that Iran would attack neighboring countries and trigger a global oil crisis.
“American fighter jets are taking off from Israel to carry out strikes in Iran; the Iranians know it.
“The great Persian Empire, arrogant and boastful, which sought to destroy Israel, has collapsed. Today there is no Shuja’iyya, there is no Jabalia. All those terrible places you remember no longer exist.
“The Southern Command chief told me, “I don’t see any houses—I see the seashore.
“We destroyed Gaza.
“In Gaza, we destroy not only what is underground, but also all the houses. Today, nearly 70% of Gaza has been destroyed.
“Twenty-four Lebanese villages, hundreds of years old—we destroyed all the buildings, not house by house, but entire villages. Their destruction has been completed. You need to understand: 15,000 to 20,000 homes across all 24 villages have been destroyed.”
Israeli Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli also had words for Turkey and the Sunni community.
“I don’t believe it is possible to separate Türkiye from Syria or create a buffer between them. The weapons used by al-Sharaa’s forces are Turkish weapons. Turkish generals are already inside the Syrian army. Türkiye’s military bases are already being established. Turkish warships are already in Tartus.
“There is no longer an Iranian Shiite empire acting as the hegemon in the Middle East. The vacuum left by Iran is being inherited, at an increasing pace, by Türkiye.
“Al-Sham” does not refer only to Syria; it also includes Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan. We could see dramatic Turkish moves in Lebanon, and I would not rule that out. Ambassador Tom Barrack is making life very difficult for us because of his understanding of Erdogan.”
Israeli Opposition Leader Yair Lapid added on the current geopolitical situation,
“Restore Israel’s bipartisan standing in the United States. How? The first step is obvious. Send into retirement Benjamin Netanyahu and his group of extremists who are tearing us apart at home and abroad. Tell the world this was a crazy period. Crazy period. That it is over.”
