Romania became the first NATO member to shoot down an unauthorized drone over its own airspace on Friday — and then did it again on Saturday morning, in back-to-back intercepts that mark a sharp escalation in the spillover of Ukraine’s air war into Alliance territory. Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruta confirmed that a Romanian Air Force F-16 engaged and destroyed a drone that had “illegally entered Romanian airspace” at 8:34 a.m. local time Saturday, approximately 9.6 kilometers west of Sfantu Gheorghe in the Danube Delta near the Ukrainian border. “The drone was detected by Ministry of National Defence radars entering our airspace at 8:22 and was struck a few minutes later,” Miruta posted on Facebook.
The Saturday intercept followed Friday’s historic first: a Romanian F-16 shot down a separate drone over Buzău County, approximately 114 kilometers from Bucharest — the first time Romania had ever engaged an intruder in its own airspace. On Friday, two Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets operating from Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base were scrambled alongside two Romanian F-16s to monitor the incursion before the intercept was made. Romanian prosecutors investigating fragments from the first drone said it appeared to be of Russian origin, per the Times of Israel and Aerotime.aero.
NATO Secretary General and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen both publicly praised Romania’s action. “Strengthening defence and deterrence along our Eastern border remains a top priority,” Von der Leyen wrote on X Friday evening — words Brussels will now need to back with resources, given that dozens of similar incursions have been detected in Romania since 2022 without Bucharest choosing to engage. In May of this year, a drone smashed into a Romanian apartment building, wounding two civilians and drawing formal condemnation from NATO and the EU. Romanian parliament subsequently passed a law explicitly authorizing the military to engage intruders — and this week, they used it. Twice.
The broader significance should not be understated. Romania borders Ukraine directly. Every drone that crosses into NATO airspace is now a potential Article 5 trigger. The alliance has spent four years watching Russia test these boundaries incrementally, betting that NATO members would blink. Bucharest just demonstrated it will not — twice in 24 hours. According to monitoring channels, Russian Geran UAVs also struck targets in the Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions overnight, while several facilities in Poltava district were hit, including two fuel stations and a fire station. The war’s spillover is no longer a theoretical concern….
In actuality, the funding, arming, and manpower provision to Ukraine by the NATO countries already risks spillover in a much more dangerous manner. An occasional drone incursion, along with hyped NATO reaction, seems to be theater.
