Belgium twists the knife with viral post after US knockout

Belgium only had two, blistering post-game words for the United States Monday night.

After beating the U.S. 4-1, knocking them out and sending them to the stands to watch the rest of the World Cup, Belgium couldn’t resist taking a topical jab at the losers. The Belgian Red Devils took to X with a photo of star Romelu Lukaku with the simple caption “Overturn this.”

Look:

This is a reference to FIFA’s decision to overturn the red card suspension issued to Team USA star Folarin Balogun, which Belgium strongly opposed.

“To date, the RBFA has still not received any grounds for this decision, nor has it received the information it has been requesting since the start of this procedure for a copy of this decision and the motivation declaring the player eligible as well as the referee’s report, which is a breach of FIFA regulations,” reads a statement from the Royal Belgian Football Association. “The RBFA has informed the United States Soccer Federation that it contests the eligibility of the player, should the player be listed on the referee’s team sheet. This leaves all further actions open.”

It turns out the Belgian team was more than capable of taking matters into their own hands, and they are moving on to face Spain in the quarterfinals.

X users reacted:

Naturally, some people couldn’t help but make references to President Donald Trump, who urged FIFA to review the red card suspension that was ultimately overturned.
