The Trump administration has made their feelings clear about the policies of the European Union over the last year, criticizing mass migration, energy policy, defense policy, support for the Ukraine conflict, and especially censorship, surveillance, and attacks on American companies.
Now, the President has come out forcefully today on his Truth Social account threatening tariffs against nations that impose such a digital service tax on American companies.
Digital Services Tax (DST) is a type of tax imposed by governments on the gross revenues (not profits) that large companies generate from specific digital activities provided to users or consumers in that country.
Traditional corporate income taxes rely on physical presence or where profits are “earned.” Many digital companies (e.g., those in online advertising, social media, marketplaces, or data sales) create significant value through user data, attention, and interactions in a market without a major physical footprint there. Countries introduced DSTs to capture some of that value, especially from big tech firms often headquartered in the US.
In the US, there is no federal DST, though some states tax digital goods/services via sales tax, and debates continue.
