GOP senator fires back after report of shouting match with Trump

U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy does not regret raising his voice at President Donald Trump, defending himself in an interview, and declaring he would not be “bullied into silence.”

The Louisiana Republican addressed a report from MS NOW’s Mychael Schnell alleging Cassidy lost his temper with Trump during a discussion on the Iran war. The senator was asked about the report by ABC News’ Rachel Scott on Wednesday.

“The American people just need to know what’s going on with Iran,” he explained. “I don’t think there’s been sufficient information shared with Congress or with the American people, so that was my message.”

“How was this received by the president?” Scott asked. “Did this turn into a shouting match?”

“Well, um, voices were raised, to put it that way,” Cassidy replied.

According to Schnell, during a lunch meeting with the president and three other Republicans, Trump called out those who voted in favor of limiting the war in Iran.

Cassidy “confronted President Trump over the Iran memorandum of understanding, a source familiar with the lunch conversation tells me,” Schnell noted, adding, “Cassidy was ‘yelling’ at Trump, the source said.”

“Per multiple people in the room: Cassidy came in guns blazing, at one point stopped calling Trump ‘Mr. President’ and referred to him as ‘brother.’ Trump repeated what he’s said on social media about the housing bill, SAVE Act & the filibuster, but nobody pushed back,” PunchBowl’s Andrew Desiderio wrote in a post on X.

Asked if he regretted anything he said to the president, Cassidy told Scott on Wednesday, “No. I’m not gonna be bullied when I’m trying to get answers for the American people.”

“This is not about me. It’s not about the president. It’s about the American people knowing what’s going on, and right now, there’s just like, ‘Hm. It seems we’re being told different things by different people.’ You may be right. I just think there needs to be more, kind of, ‘Let’s be open about it,’ and I’m not gonna be bullied into silence when I’m sticking up for the American people,” he added.
