Failing to accomplish much of anything, Congress can always be counted on to entertain Americans with their dog and pony committee hearings that serve as a tool to batter the opposing party.
Such was the case this week when the House Ways and Means Committee held a hearing to discuss the Trump administration’s fiscal policies, but Democratic Congresswoman Judy Chu (Calif.) proved to be no match for Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
“Do you agree with President Trump that you also do not care about Americans’ financial situations?” Chu asked, taking the president’s words out of context — her theatrics included a sign being displayed that claimed price increases during the war with Iran.

“Who was the president during World War I?” Bessent responded.
He might as well have asked who was on first, because Chu was stumped.
“Are you refusing to answer my question?” she asked, only to have Bessent press on the matter.
“I don’t know,” the Democrat, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, finally surrendered.
Bessent would go on to explain that, much like President Woodrow Wilson had said during World War I, the Trump administration’s actions in Iran are motivated by long-term security.
“I can tell you, Americans’ financial situation would be devastated if Iran got a nuclear weapon and there was a permanent, permanent shutdown of the flow of energy out of the Middle East,” he added.
