Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation as President Donald Trump’s Director of National Intelligence on Friday, citing her husband’s recent diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer. In a resignation letter posted on X, Gabbard said she informed Trump of her decision during an Oval Office meeting. Her resignation will be effective June 30, reported Reuters.

“I cannot in good conscience ask him to face this fight alone while I continue in this demanding and time-consuming post,” Gabbard wrote, referring to her husband, Abraham Williams.

Trump praised Gabbard’s service in a post on Truth Social, stating she had done “a great job.” He announced that Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Aaron Lukas will serve as acting DNI.

“Tulsi Gabbard is an America First patriot who has served this country faithfully and extremely well over the last 16 months,” said White House spokesperson Davis Ingle.

Signs of Tension with the White House

While the official reason centers on family health, multiple sources indicated deeper friction between Gabbard and the White House. Sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that Gabbard had been pushed out after months of displeasure from the administration.Points of contention reportedly included:

  • Differences over policy toward Iran, with Trump previously describing Gabbard as “softer” on curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
  • Gabbard’s absence from key national security deliberations regarding U.S. operations in Venezuela, Iran, and Cuba.
  • Her Director’s Initiatives Group, which worked on declassifying JFK assassination documents, investigating election machine security, and probing the origins of COVID-19.
  • Her decision last August to revoke security clearances of 37 current and former U.S. officials.

A senior White House official had previously signaled potential changes in the intelligence leadership as part of a broader cabinet review.

ReactionsSenator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the position had become overly politicized and called for the next DNI to focus strictly on foreign intelligence rather than domestic matters.

Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman who became a Trump ally, had served as DNI since early 2025.

Trump and White House officials expressed support for her family during this difficult time. No permanent replacement has been named.
