Over the course of several centuries, the American political experience has led to the formation of two political parties, plus a few fringe parties. Each major party has a belief system in place to foster unity of effort and focus on practical results such as winning elections and pursuing an agenda. A few comments on the merits of Belief Systems:

***People tend to accept information that confirms their existing beliefs and feelings, reject information that contradicts them. This is called “motivated reasoning” and it means that providing people with corrective information often does not work and may even strengthen their original beliefs. This also means that when people receive new information, their existing beliefs and feelings may have more influence over whether they believe or reject this information than rational reasoning. Consider the following core beliefs of normal Democrats:

| Requiring a voter to have a photo ID is racist! | In a study by the U of MD Center for Democracy, 99% plus adults of voting age have a photo ID. Problems with photo ID usually involve accuracy of data of a driver’s license. All citizens have access to photo ID options. | There are remedies for the 1% of citizen/voters who need assistance in getting a valid photo ID. |
| Undocumented migrants need support and a path to citizenship. Any action to remove them must include a judicial warrant. | At present, the US has 53 million people living in the US who were not born here, the largest number in our nation’s history. An estimated 20M are here illegally. Our nation was built by settlers, people who came here to build new lives and a nation. To date, an estimated 2.6M people have been deported. | Under current immigration laws, a border agent can enforce deportation with an order for removal from immigration authorities. No warrant requirement.Getting a warrant adds a new level of complexity to the process, adversely impacting the ability of CBP to do its job. |
| Defund the Police!Crime in the US is a systemic problem, cannot be solved by police. | Men who “identify” as women should be allowed to compete in women’s sports events. | Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational programs and activities receiving federal funding. In recent years, males “identifying” as females have competed in female sports events and won over 800 medals. | The House passed legislation banning biological males from competing in female sports. The Senate, led by Democrats, defeated the bill. The President has signed an Executive Order installing a ban. |
| Trump is Hitler! Trump is a Fascist!Peer the Democratic Party platform, it is focused on regulated capitalism, expanding opportunity through government investment and targeted taxes, protecting rights, and pragmatic foreign policy. It supports a growing government role in all aspects of the economy and society. | Hitler and his regime would broadly agree with the policies of today’s Democratic party. It would add taking over private enterprises, government control of the economy, militaristic expansion and control of populations under its domain. Are these policy differences a matter of degree? | The Trump administration does not support regulated capitalism, or expansion of government, or population control. It does support free enterprise, first and second amendment rights, lower taxes and America First policies. |
The core beliefs of mainstream democrats are shaped and formed by the party leadership. Will Democratic party operatives step away from some of the core beliefs outlined and forge new ideas that will return the party to its historic core values? There is no other credible resource to make changes in beliefs than the party leadership.
