President Donald J. Trump dropped a video this week explaining how he worked to save taxpayers millions of dollars on restoring the Lincoln Memorial’s Reflecting Pool, which is the site of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I have a dream” speech.
“Right now, it’s got no water in it because it was in terrible shape. It was filthy, dirty, and it leaked like a sieve for many years,” the president said in the video. “So I actually went over, went with Secret Service and a group of people, and I took a look at it.”
Trump explained that the initial plan was to remove the granite in the pool and replace it with stone, which would have cost $300 million and taken over three years to complete.
Believing there’s a “better way” to restore the reflecting pool, Trump said he got in touch with private contractors he has worked with in the past and was told the project could be done for $2 million or less.

“We scrubbed the surface of the existing granite that’s been there since 1922. We then grouted all of the granite, fixed it up,” he said.
“It took about two weeks, and now we have a nice, clean surface on which we’re putting an industrial-grade swimming pool topping,” he said, adding that the color will be “American flag blue.”
Trump said the renovation will be completed “long before July 4,” which will mark the country’s 250th anniversary.
‘It’ll stay clean. We even have robots that go in it… they clean it like a swimming pool,’ he said in another video from the White House.
‘You can have a beautiful pool, and you’ll have it for July 4th, long before July 4th, instead of taking three, three and a half years, we’re taking a week,’ he said. In addition, the President revealed the floor of the pool will now be ‘American flag blue.’
