A small boat came alongside a tanker approximately 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, off Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, and attached two explosive devices to the hull. The devices detonated above the waterline of the tanker, causing a fire in the engine room of the vessel. The fire was brought under control by the crew of the tanker, and the vessel then resumed its voyage for its next port of call.

This incident is separate from the projectile strike reported by UKMTO earlier in the day at 1600 GMT, several hours prior to this incident, as well as the dhow that caught fire in a location north of Khasab some hours prior to this incident at 0300 GMT. This attack did occur after dusk Eastern Time, and the method of attack is what stands out. The attackers were able to attach explosive devices to the hull of the tanker instead of firing at the tanker from a distance.

The attackers have not been identified by UKMTO, but the Maritime Executive attributes the attack to Iranian forces in a small-craft limpet-mine attack. Security commentator Babak Taghvaee attributes the attack to Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy special forces using a Maham 7 mine. That is the commentator’s finding and has not been written into the UKMTO warning.

Shipping risk companies, such as EOS Risk Group, have stated publicly for several weeks that the current count of reported attacks in the Strait of Hormuz is likely incomplete, because companies are no longer reporting every strike to UKMTO. Martin Kelly of that firm noted fewer reported attacks over the previous day or two.

The war has not paused for the American midterm elections on November 3. The ship and its crew once again did what numerous other ships and crews in this area have done for months: fight the fire and continue on to the next port. The oil keeps on flowing. The method of attack got closer to the hull.

‘NO AD’ subscription for CDM!
