According to CNN Brasil, which obtained exclusive CNN footage of the plane, the private jet carrying the senator, his wife and their two daughters arrived at the Opa-locka Executive Airport at 9:25 am ET/10:25 am Brasília time.

On Sunday, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (Liberal Party) lost the presidential runoff to President Lula. The same day, Justice Alexandre de Moraes (Supreme Court) determined that he had to hand over his passports and be forbidden to leave the country in a case of alleged money laundering involving the senator and the lawyer Willer Tomaz. Times Brasil reported that the Federal Police had requested such measure minutes after the electoral court confirmed the results of the presidential elections, given the risk of flight of the senator, given the post-electoral scenario, his financial means, and the possibility of him remaining abroad. Journalist Glenn Greenwald tweeted on Tuesday that Moraes signed the order seven minutes after Lula was declared the winner, even though “he’s been charged with no crime,” and that only financial investigations are underway against him.

Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, was served by Federal Police on Monday while leaving the home of his father, ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, in the federal capital of Brasília. In the video he posted afterward, Flávio said he would remain in Brazil and would be an opposition leader to President Lula. He said the decision by Supreme Court Justice Moraes was based on a comment made by his brother Eduardo Bolsonaro on October 23. In that comment, Eduardo said that Flávio should leave the country if he lost the presidential election. “I never said that,” said Flávio in the video translated by O Tempo. “Is that a reason to take my passport? Is that justice?” The 24 hours given to the senator to hand over his passports to the Federal Police had expired at 11am on Tuesday, and O Tempo reported that the Federal Police then canceled the passports and began to investigate a possible flight.

Bolsonaro, his wife Fernanda, and their daughters, Carolina and Luiza, left Brazil through the Tancredo Neves International Bridge in Foz do Iguaçu in the direction of Puerto Iguazú. The four had entered the country with valid documents and without any legal impediment to enter the country at 10:50 pm Tuesday, according to the Argentine agency responsible for the matter. Forty minutes later, at 11:30 pm, they left on a Baires Fly Gulfstream G400 jet, registration LV-JQW. The flight plan indicated that the first stop would be Guayaquil, Ecuador, and from there, they would continue to Florida. O Tempo reported that the plane stayed out of the Brazilian airspace and flew over Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru.

The timeline of Bolsonaro’s exit changed several times throughout the day Tuesday. On Tuesday afternoon, CNN sources claimed that Bolsonaro had already left for the United States. In the meantime, the Argentine government had denied that the senator had entered the country. Official records of Argentine immigration services show that Bolsonaro left Brazilian territory only Tuesday night.

The State Department told CNN it would issue visas to the senator and his family. An adviser to the U.S. president told CNN that President Trump approved the entry of the family of the senator. “They are good people,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday night. According to a Brazilian source close to the senator, he feared being arrested in Brazil. Sergio Moro said that the exit of the senator from the country was “understandable,” CNN Brasil reported. Lawmakers from Lula’s Workers’ Party (PT) have asked the Supreme Court to freeze up to 6 billion reais in assets and rights belonging to Bolsonaro, according to Times Brasil. The request is still waiting for a ruling. No details have been released on how the family left the aircraft or where they are headed next.

‘NO AD’ subscription for CDM!
