Children as young as 6 continued receiving AstraZeneca\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine in a 2021 U.K. clinical trial, even though U.K. government advisers were aware of a potentially deadly blood clot risk, a newly released document reveals. Dr. Angus Dalgleish, professor of oncology at City St George\u2019s, University of London, said the blood clot risk should have been \u201can immediate red flag to halt all vaccination of children immediately.\u201d<\/em><\/h4>\n

Children as young as 6 continued receiving\u00a0AstraZeneca\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine<\/a>\u00a0in a 2021 U.K. clinical trial, even though U.K. government advisers were aware of a potentially deadly blood clot risk, a newly released document reveals.\u00a0GB News<\/a>\u00a0first reported the story Monday.<\/p>\n

The revelations arise from the\u00a0minutes<\/a>\u00a0of a May 21, 2021, meeting of the Commission on Human Medicines, which advises the U.K. government on medicine safety, efficacy and quality. The meeting addressed a \u201cvery small but potentially very serious risk\u201d of\u00a0vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia<\/a>\u00a0(VITT).<\/p>\n

VITT is a life-threatening syndrome that causes blood clots (thrombosis) and low blood platelet counts (thrombocytopenia). It has been linked to\u00a0both mRNA and non-mRNA<\/a>\u00a0COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0vaccines<\/a>, including the AstraZeneca shot.<\/p>\n

The partially redacted document, marked \u201cOfficial \u2014 Sensitive Commercial\u201d and \u201cNot for Publication,\u201d shows that at least one member at the meeting argued that the trial \u201cshould be allowed to proceed\u201d even though there is often \u201cno successful intervention\u201d available for VITT.<\/p>\n

The minutes revealed that the U.K.\u2019s Paediatric Medicines Expert Advisory Group agreed that the\u00a0clinical trial<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which enrolled 262 children ages 6-17, including 112 kids ages 6-11 \u2014 should continue, even though the clinical trial was temporarily paused in April 2021 to investigate reports of \u201cextremely rare\u201d blood clots.<\/p>\n

The meeting\u2019s participants \u2014 including several advisers with ties to AstraZeneca or Oxford University, the vaccine\u2019s co-developer \u2014 reached this conclusion despite acknowledging that the vaccine\u2019s \u201cdirect benefit\u201d to kids was \u201cquite remote\u201d and that the benefit of vaccination \u201cwhen balanced against risk is low.\u201d<\/p>\n

GB News cited a study published in\u00a0The Lancet<\/a>\u00a0in June 2022, showing that children in the clinical trial received the second dose of the AstraZeneca shot 112 days after their first dose. According to GB News, this means that the children received their second doses \u201capproximately two months\u201d after the May 2021 meeting.<\/p>\n

The Lancet study states that the U.K.\u2019s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency\u2019s (MHRA) Clinical Trials Unit approved the second doses after a \u201creview.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alison Cave, Ph.D.<\/a>, chief safety officer for the MHRA, told\u00a0The Defender<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cemerging safety information, including concerns about thrombosis with thrombocytopenia, and the benefit-risk of further vaccination in trial participants, were subject to regulatory and independent expert scrutiny,\u201d after the trial was paused.<\/p>\n

Cave said that regulatory decisions are made \u201con the evidence available at the time and are kept under review as new evidence emerges, with the safety and interests of trial participants central to those decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

But\u00a0Dr. Angus Dalgleish<\/a>, professor of oncology at\u00a0City St George\u2019s<\/a>, University of London, said he was \u201cstaggered that the committee, with so many experts, remained quiet.\u201d He called the committee \u201cnegligent,\u201d stating that the serious blood clot risk served as \u201can immediate red flag to\u00a0halt all vaccination<\/a>\u00a0of children immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trial continued despite mounting evidence of blood clot risk<\/strong><\/p>\n

The clinical trial was launched in February 2021 \u2014 when \u201cevidence already showed healthy children faced an extremely low risk of serious illness or death from Covid,\u201d GB News reported. The trial focused on the vaccine\u2019s safety profile, rather than its effectiveness in preventing infection.<\/p>\n

The trial progressed amid increasing reports of serious adverse events linked to the AstraZeneca shot in the general population. GB News reported:<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the time the experts met on May 21, 2021, Britain\u2019s drug regulator had already received 332 reports of the rare blood-clotting condition linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine, including 58 deaths.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy November 2022, after the trial had ended, the number had risen to 445 suspected cases and 81 deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brian Hooker, Ph.D., chief scientific officer for\u00a0Children\u2019s Health Defense<\/a>\u00a0(CHD), said the real-world safety data were sufficient to stop any trial involving children.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven the astronomical rate of adverse events in these trials, the AstraZeneca vaccine should have never been given to any children, period,\u201d Hooker said. \u201cIf indeed these officials had followed the science, the vaccine would never have entered testing and would not have been on the market in the first place, especially for kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

The clinical trial\u2019s results were published in the\u00a0journal Vaccine<\/a>\u00a0last year, identifying five serious adverse events and four adverse events of special interest \u2014 although study investigators found that none of these injuries were linked to the vaccine. Some of the authors of the study were linked to AstraZeneca or Oxford.<\/p>\n

Karl Jablonowski, Ph.D., CHD\u2019s senior research scientist, said\u00a0several papers<\/a>\u00a0that were published by the time of the May 2021 meeting \u2014 including one in\u00a0The New England Journal of Medicine<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 had already highlighted the risk of what he called a \u201ccardiovascular catastrophe\u201d linked to the COVID-19 shots.<\/p>\n

Later data confirmed these early safety signals. Data obtained through a freedom of information request show that in 2021 alone, the MHRA received 48,472 reports of adverse events linking the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to\u00a0heart conditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The U.K. and some European countries had already begun walking back previous AstraZeneca vaccine recommendations in response to reports of potentially dangerous blood clots.<\/p>\n

In April 2021 \u2014 a month before the Commission on Human Medicines met to discuss the blood-clotting risk of the AstraZeneca vaccine \u2014 the U.K.\u2019s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation advised people under 30 to opt for a different vaccine if they hadn\u2019t yet received their initial dose.<\/p>\n

The recommendation was extended to healthy adults under 40 on May 7, 2021 \u2014 two weeks before the Commission on Human Medicines\u2019 meeting.<\/p>\n

Some European countries also suspended use of the AstraZeneca shots for the general population or specific population groups during this period.<\/p>\n

Denmark, Norway and Iceland<\/a>\u00a0suspended the AstraZeneca shot in March 2021 and were later followed by France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.<\/p>\n

By the time all children participating in the AstraZeneca trial received their second dose, several of these advisories or suspensions had been in place for \u201cnearly four months,\u201d GB News reported.<\/p>\n

\u2018Candid\u2019 discussions on vaccine safety took place only behind closed doors<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Bob Gill, a general practitioner with the U.K.\u2019s National Health Service, said the decision not to stop the AstraZeneca trial involving children despite the known risks of the vaccines \u201cdemonstrates regulatory capture\u201d by a \u201cnexus of power\u201d involving\u00a0Big Pharma<\/a>\u00a0and government.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see this time and time again, where the regulators do not, for whatever reason, do what seems the obvious thing to do to protect patient safety,\u201d Gill said. He added that the same nexus of power incentivizes a \u201ctarget-based system\u201d that incentivizes physicians to vaccinate a certain percentage of their patients.<\/p>\n

Censorship in mainstream media and on social media platforms contributed to this capture, Gill said, as \u201cdissenting voices were either smeared or silenced\u201d if they questioned the safety of the COVID-19 shots.<\/p>\n

Jablonowski said the minutes of the May 2021 meeting show that \u201ccandid discussions\u201d about the safety and potential risks of the AstraZeneca vaccine took place, but only behind closed doors. \u201cOutside those doors, there was no candid discussion amidst the lock-step censorship,\u201d Jabloniwski said.<\/p>\n

UK fast-tracked COVID shot rollout against the advice of medical experts<\/strong><\/p>\n

A 2022 study published in the journal\u00a0Drug Safety<\/a>\u00a0found that by May 2022, 443 cases of concurrent thrombocytopenia had been reported following AstraZeneca vaccination \u2014 including 81 deaths.<\/p>\n

Over 80 lawsuits filed in the U.K.<\/a>\u00a0alleged injuries caused by the AstraZeneca shot.<\/p>\n

In 2024, AstraZeneca\u00a0withdrew its COVID-19 vaccine<\/a>\u00a0from the market \u2014 but claimed the withdrawal was due to waning global demand, not safety concerns or the legal challenges in the U.K.<\/p>\n

Private WhatsApp messages shared with The Telegraph in 2023 revealed that U.K. politicians and public health officials made\u00a0COVID-19 policy decisions<\/a>\u00a0based on political expediency rather than science, contradicting their public statements.<\/p>\n

These documents, known as the \u201cLockdown Files<\/a>,\u201d showed that officials opted to fast-track the rollout of the COVID-19 shots, against the advice of some medical experts.<\/p>\n
