The clip depicts a student from Jefferson High School tackling a Grant High School student who was carrying an American flag as the team came onto the field. The video was posted online, where it quickly gained traction as people tried to figure out why that particular player was targeted.<\/p>\n

OutKick<\/em> tried<\/a> to contact Jefferson Athletic Director Donnie Siel on Monday afternoon, but the outlet reports that their attempts were not successful. However, the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) did issue a statement noting that the organization \u201cis aware of the pre-game incident\u201d and adding that the student involved was ejected from the game and not allowed to play.<\/p>\n

\u201cRivalry game or not, there\u2019s no place for this behavior before, during, or after an interscholastic contest,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

The team\u2019s Instagram page has been deleted,\u00a0OutKick<\/em> reports, but the page that posted the video did issue a response in an effort to add some context to the story.<\/p>\n

UPDATE: The Instagram page that originally shared the Jefferson vs. Grant football video has responded, clarifying that it is NOT an official Jefferson High School account.<\/p>\n

Regardless of the circumstances, what happened on that field is shocking to see play out in high school athletics.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s make a few things clear,\u201d it starts. \u201cThe video I posted is not affiliated with Jefferson High School, and it does not represent the school\u2019s official views or position. The video was not intended to disrespect the American flag. However, there was disrespect shown toward Jefferson by Grant players and members of their coaching staff before the game, and if you were there to witness what happened, you would understand the full context.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was an option to go around the field, but they chose not to. This was our last game ever on Jefferson Field, our Senior Night, and Homecoming. This was a special and emotional night for our school, our seniors, our players, and our community,\u201d it continued. \u201cWhat happened before the game was not appropriate, especially given the significance of the occasion. If you have an issue with the video or with me personally for posting it, you can address that with me directly. I am willing to take accountability for my own actions and for the content I choose to post. However, you will not use the situation as an excuse to be racist toward my students, my players, our staff, or anyone who represents Jefferson. They do not deserve to be targeted or disrespected because of a rivalry or a video posted online.\u201d<\/p>\n

The poster then went on to explain the longstanding rivalry between the schools, and boasted about the diversity of the school before reiterating his intolerance for \u201cracism or hateful language.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the school may not be issuing a public statement just yet, it\u2019s worth noting that Grant won the game 35-14, bringing their record up to 6-1 while Jefferson sits at 1-6.<\/p>\n
