Viktor Orb\u00e1n says he and his followers are almost ready to take over governing the country again, in remarks circulated on X on Sunday. \u201cI can say with certainty that we are 90% prepared to take responsibility for governing the country again at any moment. By the end of the year, that will reach 100%,\u201d he said. There was no information provided about where and when he made the remarks and no official transcript was published.<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n led Hungary for 16 years before Fidesz lost the election in April this year, and he has been in opposition to the current government of P\u00e9ter Magyar ever since.<\/p>\n

In the same remarks Orb\u00e1n attacked the policy towards the war in Ukraine that the Magyar government is pursuing. \u201cHungary is no longer neutral. Today, Hungary is anti-Russian,\u201d he said. \u201cIt has declared Russia an enemy, become pro-Ukrainian, and entered the Russian-Ukrainian war on the Ukrainian side, alongside the Germans, the French and the British. They are taking our money to Ukraine and dragging us into the war.\u201d<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n said in a recent post on X that the war is not Hungary\u2019s war and that the country\u2019s strength was its neutrality.<\/p>\n

As reported by Euronews, the Magyar government has made a drastic break from Orb\u00e1n\u2019s Russia policy. Hungary expelled 10 Russian diplomats on September 8, and on October 1 Moscow responded by ordering staff from the Hungarian embassy in Moscow as well as the consulates in St. Petersburg and Kazan to leave. As Euronews also reports, the Hungarian government is blocking the opening of new EU accession talks clusters with Ukraine in order to extract concessions from Kiev regarding the rights of ethnic Hungarians in the country. Prime Minister Magyar has promised \u201cpragmatic\u201d relations with Moscow.<\/p>\n

Of course, it is still to be seen whether or not Orb\u00e1n will be able to return to the Prime Minister\u2019s Office. The general elections, which were held in April this year, were a resounding defeat for Fidesz, and there is currently no sign of early elections. In the above-mentioned clips, Orb\u00e1n is already campaigning, but it is the war, and above all how Hungarians are being made to pay for it, that will be the mainstay of his campaign.<\/p>\n
