A 16-year-old gunman opened fire at an Oregon elementary school on Thursday, killing three children and a teacher, and the carnage may have been much worse but for the actions of a man being described as a hero.<\/p>\n

The man, possibly the father of a student at the school, was armed with a concealed carry weapon, and he rushed into Silver Rail Elementary School and killed the shooter before he could take any more lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cLooks like the shooter has been neutralized \u2013 possibly shot by a father at the school,\u201d emergency dispatchers said in audio shared on Broadcastify, according to the New York Post. \u201cNot sure about patients at this time. The police are arriving.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed that the shooter was killed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school, pursued him into the school, and engaged him,\u201d Krantz said at a press conference.<\/p>\n

Fifth-grade teacher Kathy Sheil Smith hailed the heroic bystander after seeing the shooter in the building.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat person saw something. They did something, and that took its own courage,\u201d she told KPTV. \u201cI\u2019m just grateful that that person was able to apprehend the suspect.\u201d<\/p>\n

The teen shooter, armed with a long gun, opened fire outside the school after being confronted by a driver in the parking lot, striking the vehicle several times and shattering the rear window, according to the Post. He then shot at the locks on the doors to the school before entering.<\/p>\n

\u201cThree students \u2014 ages 5, 8 and 11 \u2014 were killed along with a teacher. Another student, age 7, and a teacher, 54, are critical in hospital,\u201d the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n

The identity of the 16-year-old boy has not been released, nor has the identity of the hero who stopped the mass shooting.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a terrible tragedy and we are working hard to investigate this incident and get as much information as possible out to the public,\u201d Krantz said.<\/p>\n

There was some chatter online about the Oregon law banning guns on school property and whether or not the hero could face charges:<\/p>\n

It was released he has a concealed carry permit. But, CCP holders are also barred from carrying on school grounds.<\/p>\n

That person is a hero and saved lives. They put themself in mortal danger to engage the shooter. If they charge the person, society is doomed.<\/p>\n

If they charge the shooter, it\u2019ll go all the way back to the supreme court. The supreme court ruled (Bruen) that you can\u2019t ban guns from any and all public spaces arbitrarily. Oregon did it anyway. There\u2019s no legal analog of banning guns from school grounds in the 18th century.<\/p>\n
