A public falling out with President Donald Trump preceded one dignitary breaking her nation\u2019s leader\u2019s nearly two-decade streak of attending New York\u2019s U.N. week.<\/p>\n

Tuesday in the Big Apple, the leader of the free world participated in the United Nations General Assembly, chastising radical regimes and meeting with heads of state from around the world. Notably missing was Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who cited a packed schedule, rather than an ongoing rift with Trump, as the cause for her absence.<\/p>\n

A report<\/a> from Associated Medias indicated that Meloni\u2019s decision to forego the trip to New York marked the first absence for an Italian leader at the UNGA in \u201cabout fifteen years.\u201d At the same time, Palazzo Chigi, the Mediterranean nation\u2019s version of the White House, contended, \u201cIt\u2019s not a disengagement.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her place, Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, Italy\u2019s Minister of Foreign Affairs, was in attendance while,\u00a0according<\/a> to Fox News, Meloni\u2019s schedule featured \u201cseveral dossiers\u201d requiring attention domestically and had her \u201cattending six summits in three and a half weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Italy\u2019s lack of participation in addressing the Middle East had rankled Trump and soured their relationship, further dampened by criticism of Pope Leo XIV<\/a>, Meloni denied claims that she\u2019d begged for a picture with the president at the G7 in Evian-les-Bains, France.<\/p>\n

In response to her position, the chief executive contended on social media, \u201cItalian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked, over and over, for a picture with me during the G-7 meeting in France. She is doing poorly in Italy with her popularity, possibly because she turned down the United States of America, a Country that truly loves and protects Italy, when it came to denying Iran from obtaining or developing a Nuclear Weapon (But so did NATO, for that matter!).\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wouldn\u2019t even let us use Italy\u2019s landing strips or runways, a great logistical inconvenience, and this despite the fact the U.S. contributes hundreds of Billions of Dollars a year to protect Italy, and other \u2018so-called\u2019 NATO Allies,\u201d continued Trump. \u201cNow, after the United States defeated Iran militarily, she wants to be friends again in order to get her \u2018numbers up.\u2019 No thanks!!!<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, given the president\u2019s remarks on Iran during his address to the UNGA, it remained highly probable that the difference of opinion with Rome could increase in the coming days, especially where it concerned the Holy See.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s initial criticism of the pontiff as \u201cterrible\u201d after the commander-in-chief issued a threat to end Iran\u2019s \u201cwhole civilization\u201d led Meloni to assert<\/a>, \u201cI find President Trump\u2019s words regarding the Holy Father to be unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his speech<\/a> Tuesday, the president openly presented his decision between striking a deal with Iran and allowing it to rebuild, \u201cor do I annihilate the Islamic Republic, and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again? Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations? But I believe we\u2019ll make a deal, right after the election, because it doesn\u2019t make sense for them not to.\u201d<\/p>\n
