Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as Iran seeks to secure a guarantee of support from Beijing before President Xi Jinping meets US President Trump in Washington on September 24.<\/p>\n

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on the Foreign Minister’s website yesterday (September 15) announcing that Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi would be arriving in China on September 16 for a meeting with Foreign Minister Wang Yi.<\/p>\n

With the US’ major military actions against Iran having recently come to an end and remarks made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio a few days ago having still not produced the desired results for Tehran, Iran is now entering into a fully diplomatic phase. In this context, the Iranian Foreign Minister, in his capacity as Iran’s chief diplomat, is seeking to get China on board as regards a coordinated position to be taken by Beijing prior to Xi’s bilateral meeting with the US President during which he will discuss issues pertaining to a post-conflict framework pertaining to the region and involving the US.<\/p>\n

Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi of Iran, who will leave Tehran for Beijing on Wednesday, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi of China have become familiar figures in the course of the past month. Araghchi and Wang Yi had already met in July on the sidelines of the SCO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. The two ministers had also met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi held last week. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian had attended the meeting of the BRICS leaders and called for practical steps to counter the unilateral sanctions imposed by the US on Iran.<\/p>\n

The topic of the Strait of Hormuz is, however, a sensitive one for both Iran and China. China is a major oil buyer of Iran and Beijing has come under increasing pressure by the international community to do more to help to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz to global shipping. The two sides have not revealed any commitments that have been agreed to.<\/p>\n

The meeting would serve two purposes for China: to handle relations with an important oil supplier and gather information about the stance of Iran in diplomatic negotiations, ahead of the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump that is expected to determine the future relations between the two countries and Iran for years to come.<\/p>\n

Xi Jinping arrived in the Indian capital on Wednesday for the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. China’s President was in the Indian capital for the first time in seven years. In the meeting, focus was on the realignment between Global South and the US imposed sanctions. Iran, a full BRICS member, is banking on the solidarity of the grouping to pull off its diplomatic wargaming.<\/p>\n
