President Donald Trump on Tuesday slammed the Supreme Court after it denied his administration’s request to enforce new voting restrictions before the 2026 midterm elections.<\/p>\n

Trump posted on Truth Social:<\/p>\n

“Republicans just got another bad decision from the United States Supreme Court, one that the Court System took forever to give, and then blamed it, in part, on no time left to implement a solution to our totally CORRUPT and out of control Mail-In voting ‘disaster,’ which is a laughing stock all over the World, and where we are the only country that has to endure such a Nation Destroying SCAM.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On Monday the Supreme Court issued a decision that blocked the U.S. Postal Service from putting into place requirements of an executive order signed by President Trump regarding mail-in ballots. Under the Postal Service’s blocked plan, states would have been required to supply the Postal Service with voter name and address information and the states would have been required to print special barcodes on the return envelopes of absentee ballots.<\/p>\n

A federal judge in Boston, Massachusetts issued a preliminary injunction in the matter on September 25, finding the Postal Service exceeded its authority in establishing the requirements for mail-in voting. Additional preliminary relief was granted by a second federal judge late last night. As those injunctions were applying to the President’s request for relief here, the Supreme Court denied review in a one-sentence order stating that the administration’s chances of ultimately prevailing were not great.<\/p>\n

Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote a short concurrence expressing his agreement with the Court’s decision in this case. However, he noted that the Court should consider the merits of the underlying legal issues surrounding mail-in ballot procedures outside of the rushed nature of an election cycle.<\/p>\n

Many states that allow mail-in voting for some or all of their elections already have begun mailing out ballots for the Nov. 8 midterms, including Alabama, North Carolina and Wisconsin. Western states such as Oregon, Hawaii and Washington, where elections are conducted mostly or entirely by mail, also will be affected.<\/p>\n

Since taking office in 2016, Trump has long argued that mail-in voting allows for a significant amount of fraud. His effort to put new restrictions on voting via mail through his executive order would have, according to the administration, taken time to put into place to new restrictions and Democrats and voting administrators in several states argued that would have been enough time to disenfranchise millions of voters before Election Day.<\/p>\n
