Palling around with CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) addressed how his plans for 2028 supposedly hinged on the choice of another Oval Office seeker.<\/p>\n

Little more than two months out, the midterm elections may be front of mind for many, but speculation on the next presidential election remains something of a constant. With his own tenure overseeing the tarnishing of the once-Golden State drawing to a close, Newsom suggested plans for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue would be nixed if former Vice President Kamala Harris officially runs.<\/p>\n

Setting aside the performative fly fishing \u2014 though many had comments for form, attire, proximity and more \u2014 the interview from a Montana river running through the property of Newsom\u2019s in-laws\u2019 ranch featured the outgoing executive suggesting doubts about the twice-failed Harris going for a trifecta in White House bids before explaining why he wouldn\u2019t challenge her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if she runs, but we\u2019ll see,\u201d he told Tapper as he addressed an overlapped base. \u201cFirst of all, electorally, it\u2019s a gift from God for everybody else. They\u2019d enjoy the hell out of it. Mutual assured destruction. It services no greater good.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know her base of supporters. I know her friends. The zen [sic] diagram on that is just pure crossover,\u201d said Newsom, fumbling a reference to Harris\u2019 beloved Venn diagrams.\u00a0\u201cI wouldn\u2019t do that to people.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the CNN anchor brought up the vice president\u2019s previous failures, the governor agreed, \u201cThat\u2019s objectively true.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also admitted in the interview, reportedly filmed a month ago, was Newsom\u2019s own insistence that he\u00a0\u201cwasn\u2019t ready\u201d to run in 2024 and that he \u201cwould\u2019ve gotten crushed\u201d by then-President Joe Biden because he \u201cdidn\u2019t have a \u2018why.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you don\u2019t have a big enough why, then you don\u2019t belong there,\u201d said the executive who, in November 2023, appeared to have sunk his own political future in a debate with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) where his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, reportedly<\/a> stepped in to wave the white flag and prevent any further embarrassment.<\/p>\n

Newsom\u2019s recent posturing seemed to some to be another attempt at avoiding public humiliation, with former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt among others, suggesting \u201cSparkle Beach Ken is looking for his \u2018graceful\u2019 exit plan now that it\u2019s obvious Newsom would get rekt if he ran.\u201d<\/p>\n
