Much of this output comes from prolific shale formations such as the Permian, Marcellus, Haynesville, and Eagle Ford.<\/p>\n<p>This map, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/where-america-produces-natural-gas\/\">via Visual Capitalist&#8217;s Niccolo Conte,<\/a> shows 2025 gross natural gas withdrawals by state and producing area using data from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/ng\/ng_prod_sum_a_epg0_fgw_mmcf_a.htm\">U.S. Energy Information Administration<\/a>, with the latest available 2024 figures used for five states.<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/VC-U.-Energy-11-01-5.jpg?itok=lkgcwmei\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/VC-U.-Energy-11-01-5.jpg?itok=lkgcwmei\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"f9547b8a-1859-4316-afa4-8df1916563fc\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"500\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/VC-U.-Energy-11-01-5.jpg?itok=lkgcwmei\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Gross withdrawals measure total well-stream production before processing, making them different from marketed or dry natural gas output.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Texas Produced Over a Quarter of U.S. Natural Gas<\/h2>\n<p>Texas led the country with 13,603 Bcf of gross withdrawals in 2025, equal to 28.5% of the national total. Pennsylvania followed at 7,676 Bcf, or 16.1%, meaning the two states together accounted for nearly 45% of U.S. withdrawals.<\/p>\n<p>Their output is driven by some of North America\u2019s most productive shale formations, including the Permian Basin in Texas and the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>The table below ranks every state and producing area with at least 10 Bcf of gross withdrawals. Combined with Texas and Pennsylvania, the four states generated 61.3% of U.S. gross natural gas withdrawals in 2025.<\/p>\n<h2>Appalachia Forms America\u2019s Second Major Gas Hub<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond Texas, the Appalachian Basin has become the country\u2019s other major gas-producing hub.<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio together produced 13,377 Bcf in 2025, equal to 28% of the U.S. total, largely from the Marcellus and Utica shale formations.<\/p>\n<p>Alaska ranked just behind West Virginia despite having no pipeline connection to the Lower 48, underscoring the scale of its resource base.<\/p>\n<p>This production base helps explain the country\u2019s leading position in global gas markets.
