Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, sent a message to express his \u201cdeep concern over reports of hazardous conditions for transgender immigrants\u201d in ICE custody.<\/p>\n

In a public letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Greene claimed that \u201cdeliberate agency policies\u201d were responsible for the poor treatment of transgender detainees, including not providing them \u201cspecialized medical care.\u201d Effectively, the lawmaker is lamenting that the government won\u2019t provide hormone replacement therapy to all applicable subjects awaiting immigration hearings or deportation.<\/p>\n

\u201cDear Secretary Mullin, I write to express my deep concern over reports of hazardous conditions for transgender immigrants in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities, resulting from deliberate agency policies,\u201d he said. \u201cSome things bear repeating: This is a result of deliberate agency policies, including the denial of medical care and removal of protections for transgender individuals. In recent months, the federal government has halted the provision of specialized medical care for transgender detainees in at least 10 essential cities across the nation, which experts have warned can cause physical and mental health complications.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAdditionally, the Trump administration ended a Biden-era policy of reserving detention center units for transgender women. As a result, transgender women in detention facilities have been placed either with men or in solitary confinement,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n
