Canada\u2019s attempt to go toe to toe with President Donald Trump on tariffs prompted a new height in the trade war as America\u2019s chief executive declared, \u201cNO RECIPROCITY \u2014 NO ACCESS!\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout the president\u2019s second administration, tariffs have been a key feature aimed at leveraging other nations in negotiating deals from an America First standpoint. Tuesday, Canada\u2019s imbalance found $20 billion worth of American goods hit with tariffs<\/a> as high as 50%, prompting Trump to respond by banning the importation of Canadian alcohol, dairy products, and motorcycles.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone knows that Canada doesn\u2019t let our Great Dairy Farmers sell into the Canadian Market, and that the only reason Canada makes Autos is because of previous disastrous Trade Agreements while other Presidents were in Office,\u201d began a statement on Truth Social. \u201cCanada has been ripping us off for years, but what many do not realize is that the Canadian Government, including Canadian Provinces, have banned American Small Businesses and Companies from selling into their Government Procurement Markets.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the case even though Canada gets broad access into the massive American Government Procurement Market, including those of our States,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat is not reciprocity, it is a Canadian Trade Scam. From now on, NO RECIPROCITY \u2014 NO ACCESS!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am hereby directing the GSA (General Services Administration), working with the USTR (U.S. Trade Representative), to take all necessary steps to REMOVE Canadian-origin products from GSA\u2019s Multiple Award Schedules unless Canada restores full and fair reciprocity for American Farmers and Companies,\u201d declared Trump. \u201cThose schedules account for more than 50 BILLION DOLLARS a year. This should have been cut off years ago, by other Administrations, like it was by mine, only to [be] reinstituted by Sleepy Joe Biden.\u201d<\/p>\n

Along with the Truth Social post, the president issued a series of proclamations detailing how Canada was previously accused of discrimination<\/a> against American commerce, prompting additional duties.<\/p>\n

As laid out in a White House fact sheet: \u201cToday, to address Canada\u2019s increased discrimination against U.S. commerce, President Trump signed five Proclamations pursuant to Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to ban certain products from Canada and modify the scope of the tariffs on certain Canadian products previously announced on July 20, 2026. President Trump is taking decisive and appropriate action to respond to Canada\u2019s additional retaliation and continued discriminatory treatment of crucial American exports.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even before returning to the White House, the president made references to the potential of folding Canada into the United States. As the trade dispute has continued, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed his concern that U.S. measures could limit that nation\u2019s independence, ultimately leading toward that end.<\/p>\n

Beyond speculation, industries have continued to feel the impact of trade decisions by both governments. The New York Post reported that Chris Swonger, president and CEO of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, expressed,\u00a0\u201cFor more than a year and a half, American distillers have shouldered the brunt of this trade dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCanadian provinces\u2019 removal of U.S. spirits from store shelves caused U.S. spirits exports to Canada to fall by more than 70%,\u201d said Swonger. \u201cWe urge leaders on both sides of the border to reach a negotiated solution that restores U.S. spirits to retail shelves throughout Canada and returns the spirits sector to a permanent zero-for-zero tariff framework.\u201d<\/p>\n
