Prices Reclaim $100 On &#8220;Improving Downstream Conditions&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><strong>Iron ore futures in Singapore surged above $100 a ton<\/strong>, the highest level since mid-July, as tightening Chinese coking coal supplies lifted steelmaking costs and <strong>early signs of improving seasonal demand<\/strong> supported prices across the steel supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>Rafael Barcellos, head of Latin American metals and mining, pulp and paper equity research at Bradesco BBI, wrote in a note last week that the <strong>coal squeeze is helping support steel prices<\/strong>, with rebar and hot-rolled coil reaching multi-month highs. Improving downstream conditions are, in turn, providing support for iron ore.<\/p>\n<p>Barcellos pointed to China&#8217;s August manufacturing purchasing managers&#8217; index as another encouraging economic signal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/pmi_0.png?itok=1XVKv51r\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/pmi_0.png?itok=1XVKv51r\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"a5bd11a5-1f9e-48de-ac83-db645194ffce\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"294\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/pmi_0.png?itok=1XVKv51r\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Iron ore inventories also continued to decline, spot activity at Chinese steel-trading houses increased for a second consecutive week, and steelmaker margins improved.
